Dong Qingqi and "Expelling Desires and Investigating the Roots"
Dong Qingqi, a Taoist named Beggar, or: "Barefoot Taoist"
He was born in Dengzhou, Henan. His birth and death dates are unknown. He lived roughly during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. He once practiced in Fenghe Cave, Huizhen'an, in the southwest corner of Xi'an.
He traveled around the world on alms in bare feet, and set foot in Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan, Gansu, Henan, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing and other places. He visited various places, visited Taoism, exhausted all the principles of nature, and studied the principles of cultivating one's nature and pure heart to eliminate desires. At that time, he was known as the "Barefoot Immortal".
Dong Qingqi served as the abbot of Baxian Temple around the 18th to 20th year of Jiaqing (1804-1806). During his tenure as abbot, the jungle system of Baxian Temple was restored.
Baxian Nunnery established a jungle system in the early Qing Dynasty, but in the early Jiaqing years, a certain head of the family had selfish ambitions and transformed the jungle system of the nunnery into a descendants' temple and turned the public property into private property, which caused dissatisfaction among the Taoist priests of the nunnery.
Dong Qingqi, who was revered as a "god" at that time, practiced secretly in Huizhen'an. He was sincerely invited by the Taoists of the Eight Immortals Nunnery to serve as the abbot of the nunnery. The original head of the temple was replaced, the jungle system was restored, begging was carried out, the Eight Immortals' Nunnery was repaired, the West Cross Courtyard was expanded, and the altar was opened to release precepts, which led to the revitalization of the nunnery. "The Monument of the Jungle of the Eight Immortals Temple in Ten Directions" says: "During Jiaqing Bingyin, Barefoot Dong Qingqi resumed cultivation, greatly revitalized the Immortal Palace, and retained ginseng scholars." He also summarized the insights and experiences accumulated by the Eight Immortals Temple and himself over the years to eliminate sex, cultivate sex and eliminate desires, and compiled a book "Removing Desires from the Root".
