There are plenty of ways for an obscure group to make it big, but the most effective one is to join a survival show.

In 2014, troublemaking broadcaster Mnet launched an idol survival show called Coed School. It aimed to bring together talented but unlucky boy and girl groups to compete, then select one group of each to form a limited-time coed group called REBEL and debut.

Five boy groups and five girl groups entered the competition, including BTS, with Kim Taehyung, and Girlaxy, with Park Woosung.

"People who can't seize an opportunity are useless," said Park Woosung, determined to become famous.

-

Park Woosung was born in Seoul's Eunpyeong District. She had an air of privilege from an early age, all thanks to her well-off family.

Kim Taehyung was born in Geochang County. He was as lively as a monkey as a child, all because he grew up in a carefree countryside.

Despite their vastly different personalities and family backgrounds, the two had a lot in common. They both dreamed of becoming singers, they were both the sixth member of their respective groups, and they both had square-shaped smiles.

But the biggest thing they had in common was that they were both obscure.

Kim Taehyung's obscurity made sense, since he came from a small company. But Park Woosung, who came from South Korea's biggest entertainment agency, SMTOWN, had no reason to be so obscure.

By 2014, Park Woosung's older brother, Park Chanyeol, was already living the high life and buying her several designer bags for her birthday, while she was still fretting over her songs dropping off the charts after just two weeks.
