When Jiang Bai was sixteen, his father brought a little girl home.
The girl was named Zhong Qing. She had an oval face, rosy lips, and pearly white teeth, looking like a delicate little fairy.
Even the first time she called him "Brother Jiang Bai," her voice was soft and sweet.
It was impossible not to be captivated by her.
Jiang Bai took a liking to the girl and wanted to be the only one by her side.
But she seemed to be liked by everyone.
As soon as she arrived at school, she became the center of attention.
Then, in Zhong Qing's second year of high school, her mother came to take her away.
On the night Zhong Qing left, Jiang Bai climbed over the police academy's wall and raced back from a neighboring city a hundred miles away, only to watch helplessly as Zhong Qing got into a car and disappeared from his world.
Jiang Bai stumbled home and saw a letter on the table in his room. The envelope read, "To be opened by Brother Jiang Bai."
He opened it. There were only a few short lines inside:
"You don't want me, so I don't want you either."
-
They reunite four years later.
The police raid a club to crack down on prostitution and other illegal activities. Zhong Qing is dragged to the station after getting into a fight with a group of friends, and the one interrogating her is Jiang Bai.
At the time, Zhong Qing is wearing heavy makeup and sitting with her legs crossed, eyeing him with a casual, flirtatious gaze.
Jiang Bai grips his notebook tightly, his dark eyes fixed on her, their corners tinged red. He doesn't say a word.
Zhong Qing's red lips curl into a mocking smile. Resting her cheek on one hand, she looks at him with an inscrutable smile. "Officer Jiang, are you going to keep questioning me?"
