At midnight, the sound of plowing came from the barren hills outside the city. The next day, a nameless solitary grave suddenly appeared on the mountaintop.
A few days later, incense offerings ceased at every shrine within a hundred li, while incense and candles burned nonstop at the foot of the barren hills.
A peerlessly handsome monk in white passed by the foot of the mountain and offered a stick of incense.
Qing Deng, hoe in hand atop the mountain, was dazzled by his beauty. While absorbing the incense and candles offered by the common folk, she plowed two more plots for graves.
Divinities, since you refused to hear the people's prayers when you sat upon your altars, why not be buried in the earth and accept a single stick of incense?
More and more divine bones were buried on the mountain, until at last, one day, the monk in white came down from the heavens and freed the souls wronged on the mountain.
The young monk had a kind face, bright as the full moon and free of worldly dust.
He bound her bloodstained hand with the prayer beads around his wrist and said he had come to save her.
Qing Deng dropped her hoe and cast her net to capture him, but the young monk would rather die than yield.
One night, in the dead of night, a group of divine assassins descended from the heavens once more.
Qing Deng snapped the prayer beads, and divine heads fell to the ground one by one along with them.
Qing Deng's fingertip brushed over the white-robed monk's tightly shut eyes. Pointing at the severed heads and mangled bodies scattered across the ground, she said gently, "Let the divinities bear witness: if you and I cannot have our happy ending, I will make all three thousand mountains and rivers sprout divine bones."
Qing Deng had always thought those immortals had come to kill her. It wasn't until she tore off his robe and saw with her own eyes the golden mark of divine punishment branded on his chest that she began to wonder.
Only then did the beauty-struck Qing Deng start asking herself: Why had the gods, who hadn't descended to the mortal world in three thousand years, suddenly all come down? And why had they all appeared right in front of her?
Later, he plunged a wooden sword through her from behind, then embraced her. "Monster, I'll send you on your way."
So this man had been there to kill her from the very beginning.
Qing Deng died once more.
