I Am Just That Feisty

When Ren Qingqing heard that her elders intended to marry her off to Liang Zijian, she was furious. Who was she? The daughter of the wealthy Ren family of Jiangnan, a beauty from childhood, and the youngest daughter, cherished by the whole family as she grew up. She was not only a whiz with an abacus, but also knew a little about music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. Needlework was no problem for her, either. How was she any worse than those officials' daughters? Why should she be wasted on that poor scholar? Her mother patiently explained, “Among scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants, our family may be rich, but we rank last. Liang may be poor now, but scholars come first, and his learning is second to none. He'll achieve great things one day!” Ren Qingqing was still furious. She went to the night market, smashed Liang Zijian's noodle stall, and declared that she would break off the engagement no matter what. But who could have predicted how things would turn out? Her eldest brother, who managed the family business, was implicated in a major court corruption scandal, and all the Ren family's property was confiscated by the government. The entire family moved into a shabby borrowed house and survived on rice porridge. Ren Qingqing went back to the noodle stall and picked up a bowl of noodles to eat. After watching her finish, Liang Zijian asked, “Still breaking off the engagement?” Ren Qingqing replied, “Break it off if you want to!” Liang Zijian smiled. “A gentleman keeps his word. I won't take advantage of you when you're down. I won't break it off.” The blurb was captured on March 24, 2021. Theme: A proper outlook on life, and so on.
