Living the Good Life in the 1990S

In the 1990s, an unmarried woman in her thirties would be the subject of gossip whenever she stepped outside. But Liang Yunshu didn't care. The men she'd been set up with were either lazy, greedy, or unambitious. She'd rather stay single than marry someone like that. The only problem was that she lived with her parents at her brother's house, so she couldn't help overhearing her sister-in-law complain. Just as she was wondering whether to settle for someone after all, her older sister came home. Older sister: "There's a decent man in my village, a few years older than you. He's honest and hardworking, with no bad habits. It's just..." Liang Yunshu: "His family's poor? That's fine, I don't mind. As long as he's hardworking, we'll be well-off sooner or later." "No," her sister said. "He's a widower with a son, and I was afraid you might not be willing." At first, Liang Yunshu was genuinely unwilling. But then she thought about it, and realized it wasn't a big deal. She'd had enough of living under someone else's roof, never knowing where she'd be living next. As long as the man had a house and wasn't lazy, dishonest, or greedy, they could build a good life together. If he was a good person, that was enough! Right away, Liang Yunshu said, "I'll meet him!" Liang Yunshu originally thought that if she married a man who owned a house, she'd never have to move from place to place or worry about housing again. But what happened? They bought an apartment and had to renovate it. After living there for two years, she decided the floor was too high, so they moved and had to renovate again. Honestly, owning too many houses is a headache, too. ※This is not a poverty-alleviation story. Theme: Hard work pays off.
