Yu Xuan was a top student from an ordinary family at an elite school, and he had already died once.
His family was poor, and the gap between him and the school's group of untouchable rich kids was like a chasm. Their unbelievable wealth was right there within reach, yet an invisible line divided them, telling him: You don't belong. Even looking at it too long is a crime, an attempt to take what isn't yours.
Yu Xuan had no intention of forcing his way into high society. He focused on his studies, planning to leave this suffocating, oppressive environment as soon as he graduated. But when life became too dreary, he began writing stories. No, more accurately, he wrote fantastical diaries.
He invented an imaginary friend who could do anything and was always loyal to him. In his diary, he shared laughter and tears, pain and festering wounds with this friend.
But once someone found the diary, it became a weapon to use against him.
The rich kids were actually quite interested in Yu Xuan: a beautiful, melancholy, fragile little plaything. Unfortunately, he didn't know his place and resisted letting anyone get close.
After getting their hands on the diary, the rich kids picked the perfect moment to drag Yu Xuan out in front of everyone.
Their fingers flipped through the diary's yellowed pages, their edges curling. Wearing faint, knowing smiles, they asked why he wouldn't accept being kept by someone at the academy. That way, he wouldn't have to make up these ridiculous, delusional stories.
Yu Xuan's story spread all over the school forum. People laughed at his words and actions with abandon in corners where he couldn't see them. Even the other ordinary students who were top performers gave him strange smiles when they saw him.
Yu Xuan clutched the bookbag they'd thrown out like a piece of ragged cloth and trembled. He wished he could have died right then and there. By a twist of fate, he got his wish.
Then he sold his soul to an evil god.
That afternoon, a torrential rain fell over the school. Yu Xuan had no umbrella. Shivering, he walked out through the school gates in the rain. Around him were the rich kids, picked up in luxury cars with drivers holding umbrellas, and the ordinary students, carrying umbrellas as they headed for the bus or subway.
Under everyone's bewildered gaze, Yu Xuan walked to the end of the road, where a black luxury car had just pulled up, and opened the door.
The person in the back seat turned toward him. Ignoring the heavy rain splattering onto the car's expensive, soft carpet, they held out a hand and smiled. "Why aren't you getting in?"
And so he learned that his invisible friend had become real.
