Asagiri had a childhood friend who was the only person she had in the world.
Her childhood friend died.
Later, she searched among the crowds for someone who could take his place. She fell in love with the young man who resembled him most, deceiving herself until she even imagined spending her whole life with him.
She went home with the young man to meet his family, only to see someone she never expected.
That person was aloof and distant. He glanced at her and said,
"Hello, sister-in-law."
After three or four dazed seconds, Asagiri remembered how, many years earlier, she'd seduced someone to take revenge on the wealthy woman who had caused her childhood friend's death.
That person was Pei Yi, the woman's biological son.
An heir raised by an aristocratic family, proud and elegant as a swan.
She tempted him, tricking the lofty young man into falling in love with her.
When he was ready to give up everything for her, she betrayed him cruelly and sent him to prison.
It was their senior year of high school, and they were both eighteen.
She pointed the finger at him in front of everyone.
"Yes, he was the one who made the first move."
That day, rain poured down. Pei Yi stood silently where he was and asked her why.
Asagiri said that if you did something wrong, you had to be punished.
His immaculate, dazzling, utterly glorious life collapsed right there.
His eyes then were the same as they are now.
Cold and serpentine.
Asagiri thought everything was over, until her fiance went missing.
She went to Pei Yi.
"Why?"
"If you do something wrong, you have to be punished."
*
During those years, Pei Yi thought of countless reasons why Asagiri had betrayed him. The one thing he never imagined was that she'd done it for a dead man. Everyone says the living can't compete with the dead.
Why not?
The dead will never come back to life, while he has always loved her.
