The old woman before me was nearing the end of her life. Her eyes wandered, like a bird without feet that had drifted through life with nowhere to settle, finally exhausted and forced to fall into the sea.
I laid a hand on hers, dry as orange peel, and patiently listened to her halting account of her life.
"I never asked for much in life, yet I was always denied what I wanted."
She began with those words, and I knew this would be a sad story.
