Once again, I'm urging everyone to care for and protect our rare green peafowl! See the picture above!

The green peafowl is beautiful regardless of sex. It's large, with a tufted crest and fish-scale-like feathers on its neck.

Not only male peafowl, but females of this species also fan their tails, though their trains are smaller. Males are strong fliers, and during mating season they may cover several or even more than a dozen kilometers a day.

The green peafowl is a critically endangered species under China's highest level of protection! Population surveys by the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, date from 2013-2014 and count fewer than 500 birds!! The last known intact habitat is in the area around Shuangbai and Xinping Counties in Yunnan.

The "blue peafowl" is an invasive species from India. It has a fan-shaped crest, and the female is less striking than the male, with drab gray plumage. It can only glide short distances.
