Asura is a transliteration of the Sanskrit word. In Chinese Buddhist scriptures, it is also rendered as Ashuluo, Asuoluo, Asuluo, Asuluo, Ashulun, or Ashulun. Its translated meanings include "not a deity," "not of the same kind," "deformed," and "a god who does not drink." Asuras are among the six realms of Buddhist existence and one of the eight classes of devas and nagas. They are called gods, yet lack the virtuous conduct of gods and resemble demons. They are called demons, yet possess divine powers and supernatural abilities. They are called humans, since they have the seven human emotions and six desires, but they also possess the power and wickedness of gods and demons. Thus they are neither gods, demons, nor humans, but strange beings somewhere between all three.
In Buddhist scriptures, the "Asura Realm" is one of the six realms of reincarnation: the heavenly realm, the Asura realm, the human realm, the animal realm, the hungry ghost realm, and the hell realm. The human and heavenly realms are realms of goodness. Asuras, however, are often consumed by anger and driven by a fixation on strife, so they are not truly benevolent. Male asuras often stir up trouble and love to fight, occasionally attacking the heavenly kings in hopes of seizing their thrones. Female asuras are beautiful and often beguile sentient beings, making it difficult for them to cultivate themselves.
Asuras are stubborn and fierce, and possess immense power. Anyone who comes into contact with one is sure to suffer if they fail to win its favor.
