According to the official histories, Er Zhu Ying'e was the only woman to marry three emperors. But her three husbands brought her neither glory, happiness, nor true love. Instead, she endured scene after scene of grief and bitterness, intrigue and betrayal, and the cold realities of life. From a favored concubine of Emperor Xiaoming Yuan Xu, to the empress of Emperor Xiaozhuang Yuan Ziyou, and then a secondary consort of Emperor Shenwu Gao Huan, she was a lone boat, a chess piece, a mere symbol, casually placed at some turning point in history: caught in struggles for power, bloody and terrifying coups, and under a roof of false affection. Her defiant life finally came to a tragic end with Gao Huan's passing.
