Only the Stars Pass By

A popular post has been at the top of Zhihu's picks for years.

[What's it like to fall for someone who's way out of your league?]

One highly upvoted answer says:

"I can't speak for anyone else. As for me, sometimes I feel inferior, sometimes confident. One minute I think I'm not good enough for him, and the next I think he isn't good enough for me. But one thing is nice: because I fell for him, I started hoping I could become a better person."

Months later, the original poster edits the post, adding a line at the very top.

"Stop liking this! He rejected me before I could even confess. I've closed my heart to love. Damn old dog has no taste!"

Many years later, Xu Nanxing and Sheng Duo get married.

On their wedding night, she comes out of the bathroom after showering and sees him looking at her phone.

The man is lounging against the sofa with his legs crossed, relaxed and languid. He props his head up with a bent finger. The floor lamp lights one side of his face, and his peach-blossom eyes droop half-open.

After a while, he looks up casually and smiles faintly.

"Damn old dog?"

"..."

"He isn't good enough for you?"

"..."

"I used to be deeply in love with someone. Looking at him was like looking at a star high in the sky, forever out of reach."

"And then?"

Then I made myself into the moon, into a light that...

he, too, had to look up to see.

The other is an insignificant outsider with the Xie surname.

Even Shu Ling thinks so, until...

At a family gathering, Xie Hezhi pins her in a room and kisses her without restraint.

In the darkness, her voice trembles with nerves.

"I thought a powerful and influential young master like you wouldn't force anyone to do anything."

"I'm afraid you'll be disappointed, then. This powerful and influential young master..."

He smiles slowly, his thin lips brushing the girl's ear as he murmurs, "Just loves forcing people to do things."
