When he was alive, Bai Zicen was so poor that he performed on the streets by day and scavenged for trash at night.
One day, he found a little monkey in a garbage heap. Its tail had been severed, one leg was lame, and its golden fur was matted with blood. It was barely alive, its eyes full of wariness. When he reached out, it bit him.
Still, he took the little monkey home.
He bandaged it, applied medicine, and cared for it patiently until its wounds healed and it gradually stopped being afraid of him. Once it trusted him, the little monkey was round-eyed and round-headed, soft and fluffy, and adorable. It could even imitate human speech, and it kept him company as he performed every day.
Little by little, their lives got better.
But Bai Zicen still liked scavenging.
Then, one day, he found a person in a garbage heap. Just like the little monkey had been, they were covered in wounds and barely alive, their eyes full of wariness.
He took this person home too. And then...
The country fell, the little monkey left, and Bai Zicen was captured and sentenced to six thousand cuts.
.
Bai Zicen died, and he died full of resentment.
He became the White Bone Spirit, bent on stealing Tang Sanzang's flesh. But three times he tried, and three times Sun Wukong beat him to death with his staff. Now the name alone terrified him. And just then, the King of Hell interfered and actually assigned him to help Tang Sanzang on his Journey to the West!
So, the fourth time Bai Zicen appeared before Sun Wukong, he covered his head and cried, "Great Sage, don't hit me!"
But...
This time, Sun Wukong didn't hit him. Instead, he looked at him strangely.
Bai Zicen: Familiar, right? That's because you know me!
.
Later on.
Sun Wukong pinned him down among a sea of red spider lilies, his eyes bloodshot as he traced every scar on Bai Zicen's bones. That night, the winds and sand of the Yellow Springs finally settled, and the waters of the River of Forgetfulness grew still. Hot, lingering kisses fell over him. Sun Wukong cupped his face, his voice hoarse:
"Junshan, from now on, you're mine. Mine alone."
