The shou has a habit of switching personalities, a demon who combines an ascetic air with bewitching charm.
The first time Lu Yuzhou went on a mission, he met Bian Xiao. Back then, Bian Xiao was still a tiny kitten. His amber eyes seemed to spell out his terror, and he curled up pitifully beneath a boulder, shrinking away from anyone who touched him as if he were about to be violated.
The kitten was frightened and trembled all over whenever anyone touched him. But when Lu Yuzhou reached out, the little fellow slowly sniffed his hand, then licked it with the tip of his pink tongue.
A cat's tongue is rough with tiny barbs. Its warm touch brushed against his palm, leaving it tingling. It was like an electric current shooting from his hand into his heart, running down his spine and sending ripples through him.
Later, the rookie Lu became Captain Lu. He led countless missions, but never met another cat like that one: gentle and almost human in its understanding.
And later still...
The formidable Bian Xiao cornered Captain Lu in the restroom, unbuttoned his shirt, and, under the man's increasingly intense gaze, slowly transformed, sprouting furry, pointed ears and a long tail.
Lu Yuzhou: "Tell me, when you gaze into the abyss, what do you think the abyss is thinking?"
Bian Xiao didn't answer. He silently loosened his tie.
