Dancing Lights

The clouds cleared away, leaving a sky as clean as if it had been washed. A faintly cool mountain breeze, carrying the delicate fragrance of flowers and grass, swept toward him. The quiet ease of a lazy afternoon slowly spread around him. High in a banyan tree, a figure dressed in blue-green lounged sideways on a branch, gazing up through layer upon layer of leaves at the endless azure sky. Banyan trees are said to be “a forest in a single tree,” with luxuriant branches and leaves that cast a vast canopy of shade. When he was little, he loved climbing into the banyan tree to hide among the leaves at its crown and play hide-and-seek with his older sister and Jun’er. They could never find him, so he often fell asleep in the tree by himself, until his father came looking for him to bring him home for dinner. His father would gently tap him on the forehead and tell him it was dangerous to fall asleep in a tree, and that he must never do it again. Then he would exaggerate how much it hurt, making his father laugh and kiss his forehead before carrying him home, still half asleep. His father’s embrace was warm and reassuring. It made him forget his father’s warning every time, so he would sneak back into the banyan tree again and again, waiting for his father to come find him. A gentle breeze brushed his cheek. As the drowsiness of his feigned nap deepened, he slowly closed his eyes and comfortably savored the peaceful warmth, until a clear call broke the usual stillness of Diecai Ridge. ☆ The Ying Clan Series ☆ Rain After the Storm is the first main novel in the Yin Dynasty series, the story of Tianquan and Ya’er Haiqing.
