The Gentleman's Wife

The gentleman was exceptionally talented and distinguished in bearing, renowned throughout the land.

At just twenty-five, he was appointed professor of Chinese studies, teaching students and writing scholarly works.

The gentleman's wife was raised in the countryside, not a celebrated beauty or talented young lady, and people often expressed their regret.

"My wife is the most virtuous woman in the world. My love for her will endure through life and death, as we vowed to stay together forever."

One day, a foreign friend was invited to visit the gentleman's home. Before he went, his friends warned him that the gentleman's wife was as fearsome as the proverbial shrew of Hedong. Uneasy, he brought cake and red wine as gifts. He saw no shrew, though. Instead, he met a fashionable woman of graceful bearing, smiling warmly, behaving elegantly, and displaying superb cooking skills.

The friend asked why people spoke so ill of his wife, and why the gentleman never corrected them.

The gentleman and his wife exchanged a smile. His wife said, "What use is a reputation? My husband's talents attract plenty of women. He's a gentleman and doesn't know how best to turn them away. I don't mind making a small sacrifice. Ever since people began calling me the 'Shrew of Hedong,' my husband hasn't had to worry about those women anymore. At last, he can focus on his scholarship in peace."

The friend was astonished and deeply impressed.

Once, the most fashionable magazine in the country invited the wife to appear on its cover. When that issue came out, everyone was captivated by the woman on the cover. They looked her up and discovered she was the gentleman's wife.

People sighed that the name "Shrew of Hedong" was truly undeserved.

The gentleman, however, was very displeased. "I used to be the only one who knew how wonderful you are. Now the whole world knows."

His wife gave him a kiss. "My heart belongs to you alone, my dear."
