The She people, who revere Panhu and the phoenix, have practiced slash-and-burn farming for thousands of years. Simple and hardworking, they have also suffered generations of discrimination and oppression at the hands of the Han.

Lan Yun, a descendant of the She, is torn between two men and caught between political factions and the fate of her country. Can the lost culture of her people live on through her? With her own secrets and her beloved’s lies, can happiness find her again?

Ke Zhujie, a pillar of the ruling party and an elite agent, still cannot sever the ties of love with the sword of wisdom. He cannot have both family and love; he cannot decide between betrayal and loyalty.
