Mo Lan, a concubine-born daughter who is intent on marrying into a powerful family, loves poetry and moon-gazing, and is good at acting weak; Ru Lan, the legitimate daughter, competitive and strong-willed, but also forthright; Ming Lan, gentle and kind, yet clever without being a self-sacrificing saint;

And then there's... Ting Lan.
