[Novel blurb]
Twelve years ago, he was the exalted Fifth Prince. He picked up a little slave on a whim and tossed him a morsel of food, able to toy with him as he pleased.
Twelve years later, the dynasty had fallen and the world had changed. He had become a remnant of the old dynasty, wandering in exile like a stray dog, while the little slave he had once picked up had become the new emperor, worshipped by millions.

The new emperor had ascended the throne, and his temper was violent and unpredictable. Everyone at court lived in fear and awe of him.
There were, however, whispered rumors that this new emperor had once been a private slave in the household of a prince of the former dynasty. He had led horses as a stable boy and served as a step to help his master climb into a carriage, brought lower than the dust.
No one dared touch that sore spot.
So when the Fifth Prince, now a remnant of the old dynasty, was finally captured and brought to the palace, everyone held their breath, afraid that one careless move would send his blood splattering across the flagstones before the hall alongside that of the Fifth Prince.
Chengming Palace, beside the bed.
"Hah. A jade belt at your waist, an imperial robe on your shoulders. You've certainly risen in the world." Yan Yuheng looked at the familiar yet somehow strange face before him, forcing himself to stay calm as he spoke with a teasing edge. "Now you're the new emperor of the new dynasty, and I'm a remnant of the old one, a prisoner of a fallen kingdom. For old times' sake, could I ask for a dignified death?"
"A-Heng..."
After five years apart, the person etched into his very bones stood before him, still wearing the same proud expression as before. Xiang Shu's lips trembled slightly, and in the end, all the words he had to say dwindled to those two syllables.
