This story follows the experiences of illustrator Gu Shan, originally named Gu Shanmian. Gu Shan's mother died in childbirth during the autumn of her wedding year. Grief-stricken, his father ignored the objections of the family elders and named his two children Shan Mian and Qiu Ci. The three of them had a fairly peaceful life, until, at the age of seventeen, Gu Shan's younger sister Qiu Ci died of an illness. His grandmother berated his father, Gu Chuan, for choosing such an ill-omened name, saying that one's fate was shaped by one's name. His father had lost his beloved daughter, while his once-gentle and considerate son grew estranged from him because Gu Chuan had been busy with his anniversary art exhibition and Qiu Ci had not received treatment in time. The tension between father and son was about to erupt... Gu Shan's childhood friend Qin Shen had studied painting under Gu Shan's father since childhood and deeply admired Gu Shan's talent. She had been his devoted fan all her life. After Gu Shan lost his sister, his personality changed completely, and many of his friends left him. His father later died in an accident, before they could resolve their misunderstanding. After many more twists and turns, Gu Shan grew increasingly eccentric, even violent. She was the only person who remained by his side...
"My name was Shan Mian. Ever since I was little, I liked the poetic meaning of my name, taken from the line 'Moving my bed to sleep facing the mountains.' But after Qiu Ci died, I grew to hate the ill-omened name my father had given me."
"Gu Shan, do you know that your name and mine are a perfect match, as if we were made for each other?"
I want so little, so little that all I want is to see you smile. If fate is kind to me, I pray I can stay by your side, cast aside fame and fortune, and sleep in the deep mountains, or lie with you among the woods a hundred years from now.
