"To hell with that! If you push me too far, I'll find a man and marry him." Zhou Haisen must have been really furious, because that line made me laugh for ages. Zhou Haisen and I had been friends since we were kids. I saved his life when we were young, but the price was losing my hearing in one ear. He was half a year older than me, yet he insisted on calling me "bro" for over a decade. Then in college, I stole countless girlfriends from him. Zhou Haisen declared, "Ren Bing, you and I are sworn enemies!" Then he took his recommendation letter for graduate school and went to Shanghai, never to be heard from again.
Three years later, he came back, and a blind date between us set off a tidal wave.
"I like you. No, I love you, Ren Bing." Zhou Haisen's words crept into my heart like a nightmare. The feelings I'd had for him all these years turned out to be love. I punched him and got engaged. On a snowy night, I reminisced with him about the fun we'd had growing up. He whispered something into my deaf ear, then disappeared. When he showed up again, it was at a drinking party where he got so drunk he could barely see straight, hardly fitting for a teacher.
"You confessed to me, said you liked me, loved me, kissed me, then ran the hell away. Zhou Haisen, you can't have it both ways."
I stubbornly kept him by my side. I knew Zhou Haisen was crying, his tears falling on my arm as he faced away from me.
I never gave Zhou Haisen an answer, or defined our relationship. We used to be the best of buddies. What are we now, friends, lovers? I don't know.
Come on!ヾ(*?▽?)?
