It is said that among the Nine Clans, there was once a person whom anyone within the clans, from clan heads to household servants, could punish without asking why.
This person was called the Immortal Eye.
Legend has it that the Nine Clans pooled their resources to support the Immortal Eye, and a new one was chosen every hundred years. One account says the previous Immortal Eye left a will, and a successor was chosen from among the Nine Clans. Another says the clan heads drew lots to decide.
Whoever becomes the Immortal Eye is destined to live alone for life, and cannot leave the Immortal Tower without a clan head from one of the Nine Clans accompanying them.
