Since most esports stories have players as the protagonists, I wanted to write one from a coach's perspective. Also, watching the World Cup over the weekend left me feeling a little wistful. The 2019 World Cup was already recruiting coaches, and I still hadn't finished writing! On the one hand, I'm amazed at how strong Korea is (it's truly beyond most people's imagination and understanding). On the other, I keep wondering when China will be this strong too. So here's a bit of wish fulfillment: a story about China winning a championship.
Note:
1. Set in the world of Overwatch, where heroes are needed.
2. The story's timeline runs from the 2017 OWPS era to the 2018 OWWC, but it's an alternate universe.
3. All match events are made up by me, pure wish fulfillment.
4. Note that the coach is the bottom.
5. There will be quite a lot of match scenes.
6. My game's text is in English or German, and the voices are in English or Korean. I've barely watched Chinese-language streams or CNOC matches, so please forgive any awkward terminology.
Some gaming terms:
BOx: x is usually a number, such as BO5, meaning best of five, or first to three wins. Likewise, BO3 means best of three, and BO7 means best of seven, or first to four wins.
DPS: Damage per second, meaning damage dealer.
Hitscan: Instant-hit characters, such as Soldier: 76, Widowmaker, and Tracer. The opposite is Projectile, such as Genji, Junkrat, and Pharah. This term appears frequently because the words for long- and short-range guns get censored.
Support: Usually a healer.
Healer: A healer. In my opinion, depending on the player's style, Brigitte sometimes counts as a healer and sometimes as half a healer, since her healing output is too low.
Tank: Tank.
Main Tank: The shield-bearing Reinhardt, Winston, Wrecking Ball, and Orisa.
Off Tank: D.Va, Zarya, and Roadhog.
Dive: A dive composition.
GOATS: A 3-3 composition, named after a team.
Eliminated: Out of the running.
