Grapefruit, Evergreen

Because of her first love, Bian You cut off contact with the friend she was closest to, all on her own.

That romance seemed to invite retribution, too. It ended badly.

A week after the breakup, Bian You finally couldn’t take it anymore and got completely drunk at a bar.

As the alcohol went to her head, she thought about how she’d lost both love and friendship. Seething with hatred for her ex-boyfriend, she called a number in a haze.

Before he could say a word, Bian You rasped out a stream of abuse at him, then ended with a threat: “Don’t even think about it. I’ll never make up with you in this lifetime.”

After a long pause, a familiar voice came through the receiver, one she could recognize from the very first syllable.

It was her long-suffering best friend, whom she’d abruptly cut out of her life not long ago.

“This lifetime?” Xu Qingsong’s voice was warm, his laugh cool. “Don’t count on it in the next one, either.”

May grapefruit stay evergreen, and may you love me for a long, long time.
