Chu Yuanyu, the legendary thief Shadowless, has been retired from the martial world for years. But when the painting Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River draws him back into action, he expects an easy job. Instead, he gets caught up in a scheme and attracts the attention of something he shouldn't have: a "filthy thing."
The woman is breathtakingly beautiful, but completely insane. One moment she's weeping and begging for help; the next, she'll stop at nothing to capture him. After she repeatedly holds her flexible sword to Chu Yuanyu's vital points, he starts to think he'll never escape her grasp in this lifetime...
An ensemble story built around Chinese mythology, with self-contained arcs. The main couple are both formidable, like blades crossed in a duel. The side couple are the aloof, prickly Qi Constable, who blushes at the slightest teasing, and the sweet, straightforward Mo, a coroner who fell in love at first sight after transmigrating.
The story includes original worldbuilding, so don't overthink the details. If it's not your thing, please don't flame it. I'm bad at writing blurbs, but the story is definitely better than the blurb.
Blurb for the five current volumes:
Volume One: Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River. The river goddess in the painting looks lifelike, yet everyone who views it drowns. The protagonists meet for the first time and join forces to break the curse of the painting under the guidance of a mysterious power.
Volume Two: A Child's Cry at Midnight. A Xiqu in Shangling Mountain is causing trouble. Young men and women are sacrificed to the beast in exchange for a bountiful harvest. The protagonists try working together in earnest as they solve the mystery of the Xiqu.
Volume Three: Matchmaking Gone Wrong. The matchmaking immortal quits his tedious job and goes on a spree, pairing people at random. Everyone wakes up to find their couples switched, and when Mo the coroner gets close to someone else, Qi the Constable turns into a jealous wreck.
Volume Four: The Mirror of Heaven and Earth. Because of Mo the coroner, the whole group ends up in the modern world. On their search for the Mirror of Heaven and Earth so they can return to the past, a series of hilarious mishaps ensues.
Volume Five: Nothing But a Dream. The dream-eating tapir of Mount Wusu feeds on dreams, weaving one sweet dream after another. But they're actually sugar-coated bullets that leave people in agony, and are almost impossible to escape.
Theme: Stay positive and keep striving.
