The Pretender: A Different Wang Manchun

After watching the TV series The Disguiser and reading so much fan fiction, I suddenly found myself feeling sorry for Man Chun. She loved someone she could never have, was stubborn to a fault, and went all the way down the wrong path. I wanted to give her and Big Brother a different ending. It would also fulfill Man Chun's all-or-nothing, love-and-goodbye romance. Whenever I read all that fan fiction, I wonder: What if there had been two children between Man Chun and Ming Lou? What if Man Chun and Ming Lou had been comrades fighting side by side, rather than the pair described by the line, "You were born a good woman, so why become a traitor?" What if Man Chun knew that he was only putting on an act with her, yet was still willing to play along? Family vendettas, national hatred, love and hate... When men and women are trapped in this mire, how are they supposed to carry on? Everyone wears one, two, or several faces, performing a different kind of drama and living a different kind of life.
