I can't remember when I first came up with this idea. It's been so long that I've run out of inspiration, so I'm switching to a fantasy danmei quick transmigration anthology. Read or skip as you like, QAQ.
[Beep. The True Match System is at your service.]
The True Match System arrives, and all the second male leads awaken as a group. They toss out their lapdog scripts and find the red threads that truly belong to them.
World One: Gentle, refined second male lead x sunny, straightforward cannon-fodder top
He spent ten years by the protagonist bottom's side. Over those ten years, he grew from an inexperienced boy into a gentle, dependable man. To everyone else, he was perfect, but to that one person, he would always come second. In the end, all he got was: "You're wonderful, but I only see you as an older brother."
System: "Your fated match is the son of your business rival, who is about to return to the country. We recommend switching targets immediately."
He fell silent for a moment, then closed the proposal he'd spent all night writing. "No. I'm going to focus on my career and give up on love."
World Two: Cold, patient second male lead x obsessive, unhinged villain top
He was the quietest guardian by the protagonist bottom's side. Until one day, he discovered that he was nothing but a tool the protagonist bottom used to provoke the protagonist top.
System: "Your compatibility with the villain is 99.9%. Would you like to form a bond?"
Him: "He's too dangerous."
System: "But the way he looks at you is like he wants to take you apart and devour you."
World Three: Cheerful puppy-like second male lead x gloomy, disabled big shot top
He was the protagonist bottom's little ray of sunshine, bringing him breakfast, picking him up from work, and cheering him up every day, come rain or shine. Until he saw the protagonist bottom kissing the protagonist top in a corner of a bar, and the drink in his hand went clatter onto the floor.
System: "Don't cry! There's someone in the room next door who's perfect for you!"
He rubbed his eyes. "Is he handsome?"
System: "Very! Though his reputation and his health aren't great..."
World Four: Scheming, manipulative second male lead x earnest, wooden protagonist top
He was the most "considerate" second male lead by the protagonist bottom's side, always gentle and never competing for anything. Everyone praised him for being so understanding.
System: "Stop pretending. You're obviously so angry you want to rip up the protagonist bottom's love story."
He smiled. "Of course not. As long as he's happy, that's all that matters."
System: "...Then why did you message the protagonist top in the middle of the night saying, 'Big brother, I saw Mingming shopping with another guy today. I'm so worried about him'?"
World Five: Cunning, devious second male lead x untouchable protagonist top
He was the protagonist bottom's most trusted "strategist," helping him scheme against rivals, remove obstacles, and pave the way to winning over his love. Everyone thought he was a loyal and devoted friend. Only he knew that every one of the protagonist bottom's "unfortunate coincidences" was his doing. He was just waiting for the protagonist bottom to suffer in love and return to his arms.
System: "Your true match is that person the protagonist bottom likes. What was his name again?"
He toyed with his lighter, smiling carelessly. "Mess with him? I'd rather see him beg me."
World Six: Polished scoundrel second male lead x universally despised villain top
He was the protagonist bottom's university professor. His shirt was always immaculate, buttoned all the way to the top, and his gaze behind gold-rimmed glasses was always gentle and courteous. The protagonist bottom came to him after a breakup, when he was sick, and whenever he needed guidance. Until the protagonist bottom linked arms with the protagonist top and said, "Teacher, we're getting married."
He smiled and offered his congratulations. That night, he threw every portrait of the protagonist bottom he'd drawn over the years into the fireplace.
System: "Host, you seem very angry."
He gazed into the flames. "I'm smiling so happily. Obviously, I'm wishing him well."
System: "But just the other day, you packaged up dirt on the protagonist top and sent it to his rival."
The worlds may not be written in order, and there may be other pairings along the way.
Reader's Guide:
1. Anthology, one-on-one pairings, all characters are each other's first and only, happy endings.
2. This is an experiment with many genres I haven't written before. The plot may be illogical and silly, with the focus mainly on romance.
I'll add more if I think of anything else.
