The Slanting Moon Far Away

In the sixteenth year of the Qianyuan era, Emperor Song Hongwu made the fifteen-year-old Fei Ziye his Consort Chen.

The young woman of the Fei family had deeply endeared herself to the emperor, who cherished her greatly. However, she was already betrothed. The Empress Dowager accused her of seducing the ruler and wanted to strip her of her status and make her a commoner. The emperor insisted on protecting her, so it never came to pass. In the palace, she was known as Consort Zichen.

In the twentieth year of the Qianyuan era, Consort Chen passed away. The emperor was overcome with grief and, despite the ministers' objections, buried her alongside the empress, with the rites due to an empress. A month later, a palace servant secretly reported that the Noble Consort had caused her death. The emperor was furious, deposed the Noble Consort, and demoted her to a commoner. The Zhao family lost its noble rank. Since Prime Minister Zhao had failed to keep his household in order, he submitted a memorial asking to retire, and the emperor granted his request.
