I read a story from Japan's Heian period about two wives of a high-ranking official who gave birth at the same time, one to a boy and the other to a girl. The boy happened to have a girl's personality, while the girl had a boy's personality, much to the adults' distress. I'm not entirely sure what boys or girls are supposed to be like, but the disharmony inspired a lot of ideas, so I borrowed this premise to write a story. I borrowed only the premise; the story and characters are entirely different. The setting is China in the late Qing dynasty. Why the late Qing? Well, there's a reason for that. Real historical figures and events in the story will be suitably altered as needed.
Theme:
The ending is great. It feels like the two of them are sleeping together, just like the yin and yang fish in the Tai Chi diagram. Yin and yang complement each other and merge into one. As for who is yin and who is yang, what does it matter?
