After inheriting the throne from his father, the current monarch, Vic, becomes a pillar of the fight against the Altered and a heroic leader of his people. But his love life is practically a wasteland, and who will wear the queen's crown remains a mystery. For centuries, he has lived by the sword and slept beside slaughter, until the ordinary human girl Cass appears.

After one impulsive night, Vic and Cass soon fall in love. But their relationship faces enormous obstacles from the start: their different races, the unexpected death of a brother from the council, an old betrothal being brought up again, and opposition from those around them... Everything seems to spell doom for their love.
