During the Tang dynasty, the kingdom of Silla had a custom of choosing handsome sons from noble families, applying powder and dressing them up, and calling them "Hwarang." The Hwarang were followers of the Immortals. Queen Mother Jinsow summoned the Hwarang and had the people honor them.
At the time, bone rank was paramount. Sacred bone was the highest rank and qualified its holders to inherit the throne. But the sacred-bone lineage had dwindled, leaving only a handful.
The Sacred-Bone Park clan had a son named Woltaek, who was orphaned at a young age. The True-Bone Park clan raised him, and he became a companion to Pungwolrang. Educated from childhood, he was fit to be a king.
He was known as "Woltaekrang."
