Blurb

The newly appointed military patrol officer of Kaifeng Prefecture is a handsome, refined young man, courteous and modest. The veteran constables in the yamen can't help wondering: since the founding of this dynasty, every military patrol officer has come from the ranks of the military. How did this scholarly-looking young man end up in a military post? Did his career go nowhere because people pushed him aside, or did he fail the civil service exams and pass the military ones instead? Is he coasting on the position thanks to his ancestors' influence, or did some influential patron recommend him? Rumors spread until someone finally works up the nerve to question him, outright or by dropping hints. He remains unruffled and refuses to take the bait. "Counsellor Xie is about to hold court and hear a case. Please come with me to the prison to bring in the suspect." As the saying goes, such is the charm of a carefree soul: one smile, and a hundred worries are forgotten.
