A story about my grandfather's grandfather.
A simple, down-to-earth story set in the Republican era.
Mr. Liu Chuanjie once said: "We are among the few people left who witnessed the tail end of that period of history. It is our responsibility to restore it as accurately as possible."
I feel the same way. I am 78 this year, in the twilight of my life. I was born in the late Republican era, and lived through everything from the founding of the People's Republic to today's reform and opening up.
My father was born in the late Qing Dynasty. In the first year of the Republic, he was already a thirteen-year-old citizen of the Republic.
I heard him tell stories about the fall of the Qing Dynasty and about our hometown during the Republican era.
Even now, I can count myself among the few who know about the tail end of that period of history. I feel it would be a shame to take these old stories to my grave. But I am not capable of accurately restoring the history of that time, so I have written this novel about some things I saw and heard in the countryside of Weinan.
