One who comes seeking no benefit from Guangyi is no human being. Xie Guangyi of Chang'an is said to be "wild in name, jade in nature." The current emperor sought him with lavish gifts, but failed to win him over. People of the time sang: "A thousand-gold hat in Chang'an is worth less than the robe beneath him; the markets beg him to stay, but only his graceful figure can win him over." The current emperor weaves the classics into the fabric of his rule, and people praise him, while Heaven lends its protection, yet he cannot sit down for a game of go with Guangyi. Some lament this. But is that really how things are?
