Introduction by Andrei A. Orlov

Publication Date: November 2009

The Second Book of Enoch was discovered in 1886 by Professor Sokolov in the archives of the Belgrade Public Library. Abbreviated as 2 Enoch, it was composed in the second half of the first century AD. This anonymous work, whose author is unknown, belongs to the Old Testament and is considered part of apocalyptic literature. Also known as The Secrets of Enoch or the Slavic Apocalypse of Enoch, it expands on Genesis 5:21-32, recounting the time from Enoch’s arrival in the world to the Flood in Noah’s time.

When it was discovered, only complete versions written in Slavonic survived. In 2009, however, fragments of 2 Enoch in Egyptian were found, and Greek was subsequently considered to be its original language, predating Slavonic. The book was reprinted at the end of the nineteenth century. Although 2 Enoch underwent revisions and alterations to make it more acceptable to Christians, no Jewish or Christian denomination recognizes it as part of the Bible.
