“I’m sorry to reopen old wounds, but as your partner, I still have to remind you of something.”

“Your student is dead.”

“Ryo Murasaki isn’t him, so you have neither the duty nor the need to do anything for him.”

“Are all young people as restless as you?”

“Probably?” He chuckled and leaned in slightly, his breath brushing the crown of her head. “Mm, Ah Kun, you’re getting better at bandaging wounds, too... Ow!”

“Why are you fidgeting? Are you a monkey?” She looked up, her expression stern, but the faint blush behind her ears gave her away.

The one who had caused it noticed, and for no reason at all, felt a warm sense of pleasure bloom deep inside.

“So, Ah Kun, what are you hiding from me?”

“Silver Fang Knight, ZERØ. Our friendship ends here. As the Western Dog Bureau and the Council of Elders have said, just leave the rest alone.”

“Is that so?” He sounded as if he might be asking a question, or simply stating a fact. “I see.”

“Yes.” She heard herself answer, crisp and decisive. “That’s how it is.”

“But since you’ve already seen a woman wield a Makai Sword, why not take a guess?”

“How many bones will the ‘Flame Wolf’ of China have to replace to wear the Makai Armor?”

“Or rather, how many bones will she have to take from her dying student’s body to replace her own?”

“What an utterly tragic story.”

Yes, that’s right. I’m writing a Garo fanfic. (Not.)

This is a self-indulgent work born of my frustration with how badly the Dragon Blood heroine was handled.

The heroine is an original character, and the premise is roughly a fan-created spin-off where Yuna from Black Blood can wield a Makai Sword. If that doesn’t sound like your thing, feel free to skip it.

I don’t think I’ll turn it into something like Alice in Search of the Sea, right? (Scratches head.)
