Longing stretches on, and so does remembrance; a brief longing has no end.
"Yi'an."
Snow fell until the third watch, when he suddenly awoke from his dream. In the stillness, the only sound was the steady dripping of the water clock. Someone lifted the curtain and entered the bedchamber. On the bed, a man with disheveled hair and a haggard appearance leaned against the headboard, staring into space for a long, long time.
"General."
"Has the snow stopped?"
"Yes."
Shen Yanling lowered his gaze to the old sachet clutched tightly in his hand, then suddenly asked, "What about Changyi?"
As if he had touched upon some unspeakable taboo, the person he had asked melted into the night like a silent shadow. For a long time, no answer came.
The wind and snow fell silent. The last faint sob in the world was swallowed up, and he said softly, "I heard her sobbing beside me."
"General, you had a nightmare."
"Is that so?"
In the bone-deep cold, the blood seeping from the wound on his shoulder had frozen into ice. He gave a bewildered smile and murmured, "Yi'an, I can still see her in my dreams. When I wake, all I see is her grave. I truly can't tell what counts as a nightmare anymore."
