The peerless beauty famed throughout the realm was the crown prince of the current dynasty, the moon in countless young women's hearts. He died young, struck down by a knife to the chest from his own father.
Reborn in a new life, he vowed to become emperor. Whoever stood in his way, be they god or Buddha, would be slain.
Ruan Qingqiu entered the palace alone to avenge her mother.
Later, in the third month of spring, with flowers in full bloom and an auspicious day chosen, Ruan Qingqiu married. In phoenix crown and embroidered robes, with a bridal procession stretching ten miles, the wedding was so grand it emptied the streets of the capital.
The crown prince, serving as regent and dressed in his wedding robes, descended the lofty jade steps to welcome his bride.
The noble young ladies sneered: A merchant's daughter uses her looks to ensnare men, throws herself at her betters, and flirts around. She'll be cast aside sooner or later.
The officials remonstrated: The crown princess is bewitching and improper, spoiled and jealous. She cannot be the model of virtue for all under heaven. She'll only bring disaster to the nation, so she must not be allowed to stay!
Everyone expected the overbearing crown princess to suffer endlessly and live a miserable life. Instead, the crown prince ascended the throne and seated her upon the phoenix throne.
From then on:
They trimmed candles by the western window and played chess on rainy nights.
They warmed their bed curtains and rested together, neck to neck.
He gathered her dark hair and painted her brows.
Asked for comment, the model emperor and empress of the capital said:
The empress wholeheartedly approves: Sorry, when you're lucky, you can do whatever you want. And I'm not the only one turning green with envy.
The emperor, who asked not to be named: My wife's admirers are too numerous. What can I do? I'm at my wits' end.
On the surface: An aloof, untouchable crown prince x a crown princess blessed with a fortune as good as a lucky carp
In private: A gentlemanly beast of a hero x a bright, sly, spirited heroine
