The protagonist’s identity
A mermaid: A human body with a fish’s tail, a supernatural being known as a mermaid. Mermaids recorded in ancient Chinese texts are the same as the mermaids of Western mythology. The gauze they weave stays dry underwater, and their tears turn into pearls. Volume 12 of Gan Bao’s In Search of the Supernatural from the Jin dynasty states: “Beyond the South Sea, there are mermaids who live in the water like fish and never stop weaving. When they cry, pearls come from their eyes.” This account also appears in Records of the Natural World and Records of Strange Tales, with minor differences. Volume 1 of Records of Strange Tales also says: “Mermaids are the same as Quanxian, also known as Quanke. The South Sea produces mermaid gauze, woven in secret by Quanxian. It is also called dragon gauze and is worth more than a hundred gold pieces. Clothes made from it do not get wet underwater. In the South Sea there is a Dragon Gauze Palace, where Quanxian weave; some of the gauze is as white as frost.” Volume 803 of the Imperial Reader of the Taiping Era also quotes Records of the Natural World, in a passage absent from the current edition: “A mermaid came out of the water and lodged in someone’s home. After staying several days, she sold silk. When she was about to leave, she asked her host for a dish, then wept pearls into it until it was full, and gave it to him.”
Records of the Natural World: “In the waters of the South Sea, there are mermaids who live like fish and never stop weaving. Their eyes can weep pearls.” Ren Fang of the Southern Liang dynasty wrote in Records of Strange Tales: “Mermaids are the same as Quanxian, also known as Quanke. ... In the South Sea there is a Dragon Gauze Palace, where Quanxian weave gauze, some of it as white as frost.” Records of Strange Tales also says: “The South Sea produces mermaid gauze, secretly woven in the mermaids’ chambers. It is also called dragon gauze and is worth a hundred gold pieces. Clothes made from it do not get wet underwater.”
