Jade Waters, Exquisite Beauty

They say that husband and wife are bound by fate, that their devotion runs deep and their bond is profound. They speak of sharing a bed and of the joy of a wedding cup, of hearts joined in secret affection.

The bond between husband and wife is formed over three lifetimes in a previous existence, and so they become spouses in this life. Facing each other, husband and wife are like mandarin ducks, flying together and sitting side by side, their beautiful faces together. Their virtues are a blessing; their love is deep, their two bodies of one heart.

If a bond lasts four years, husband and wife live in harmony; if resentment arises after four years, enmity follows.

If the bond proves ill-fated, perhaps they were enemies in a past life. Now they turn against each other and grow resentful, brought together only to clash. The wife speaks several words at a time, while the husband turns away in displeasure. They hate each other like cat and mouse, like a wolf and a sheep together.

Since our hearts differ and we cannot find common ground, let us quickly summon our relatives and seek a separation. Let us list our possessions in writing and each return to our own path.

I hope that after we part, my wife will comb her hair into a lovely cicada-wing coiffure, carefully groom her moth-like brows, display her graceful and elegant figure, and choose a high-ranking official as her husband. May she cast her shadow in the courtyard and enjoy the beautiful harmony of a zither and lute in tune.

Let us dissolve our grievances and untie our knots, and never hate each other again. Once parted, may we each find peace and joy.

After four years of clothing and food, I now offer you my humble respects. I sincerely wish you a long life, my lady.
