In mythology, the word "narcissus" refers to the beautiful, self-obsessed young man Narcissus, and so the flower came to represent narcissism. But narcissism can also be understood as a journey of pursuing the self: finding yourself, discovering yourself, and loving yourself. In the story, Youla is searching for herself when she meets Jingran and receives an unsigned love letter. From a philosophical perspective, everything is connected. Jingran and Youla set out together to find the letter's owner. Along the way, Youla inspires Jingran to understand herself, overturning some of her old beliefs, and Jingran also begins to learn about herself. Part of the journey of self-discovery is learning to love yourself. In the end, Youla finds Alai, who resembles her, bringing the story of the narcissistic "narcissus" to the fore... and embarking on the next leg of her journey toward self-discovery.
