The little boy crouched beside the little girl and tried to comfort her. "Why are you crying? Did someone bully you?"
When she stayed upset and did not answer, he angrily stamped his feet and shouted, "Crybaby! Nobody loves you!"
Who knew that hearing this would make her cry even harder? He had thought those words would make her stop, but she only cried more and more.
"Don't cry, don't cry. If someone bullied you, tell me and I'll beat them up for you."
No matter what he said, the little girl would not stop crying. He seemed to understand, and stopped trying to comfort her with words. Instead, he held her tightly. That worked pretty well, and little by little she stopped sobbing.
"Big brother, can you take me home with you? My mother doesn't want me anymore. I don't have a home," she said, her voice trembling.
He was momentarily stunned. He had never expected her to say that, nor had he ever thought her mother would abandon her.
He smiled and said, "Come home with me. I'll protect you and take care of you."
She gazed at him blankly and nodded.
Throughout high school, she loved him, but he only showed her the kind of care one gives a younger sister.
He loved her, but treated her like a little sister. He didn't dare say it aloud.
The arrival of one person disrupted the conflict between them.
Liking someone takes a long time spent together. Loving someone means looking out for each other.
