“Have you ever been to the human world?”
“I don’t know.”
The fox spirit sat atop the ruins, her fluffy, soft fur gilded with a faint sheen of gold by the autumn sun. Beside her lay a fallen Buddha statue, half-buried in the earth and covered in patches of moss.
A field mouse, its slender tail trailing behind it, scurried across the statue’s cheek and squeaked, “How can you not know?”
The fox gazed intently at the distant mountains veiled in mist. An ancient temple on a peak appeared and disappeared from view, and the sunlight glinting off its roof formed a hazy ring of five-colored light. She said, “I don’t know.”
There are foxes in the green mountains. It takes a hundred years of cultivation to take human form, another hundred to drift through the mortal world, and a final hundred to meet their end.
Come, come! Rain or shine, I’ll be waiting in the pit for you :)
