One day, while on a business trip, Dong Yang came across a little boy, Beibei, who had gotten lost. As she spent time with him, his experiences reminded her of the little girl from the alley when she was a child: her best childhood friend, Xie Xiaotai; Lin Ruoxun, the older girl next door who loved looking after them; and her grandmother, who was always making all kinds of pastries for them. She thought of all those stories from the alley, some absurd and funny, others heart-wrenching... During the vacation after her business trip, Dong Yang returned to her hometown of Quanguan, a small town in Jiangnan. She saw many of her childhood friends, but not Xiaotai. Disappointed, Dong Yang went back to Shanghai. She never expected that, some time later, Xiaotai would call, bringing their lives together once again.
In the days that followed, Beibei's return gave Dong Yang the courage to face life, while Qi Jinghuai's warmth and companionship gave her the resolve to keep loving. Dong Yang thought her life would finally settle into peace, but what came next crashed over them like storm waves at sea, battering the ordinary, vulnerable shoulders of several young people... Family, friendship, and love bring ordinary people so much happiness, but also burden so many with extraordinary hardships.
