Notes from the Harem: A Side View of Imperial Glory Series
In the Japanese court, there was a curious fact: titles such as Empress and Grand Empress Dowager, originally meant only for the Emperor's consort, could on certain occasions be bestowed upon other women. These women were mostly the Emperor's sisters or aunts. They stood at the very summit of the dynasty's honors, yet in doing so they surrendered the right to love and be loved. So I have recorded their names, as a faint remnant of memory for the women who lived beneath the blossoms and moonlit railings of that flourishing age.
