In August 1943, during the Battle of Kharkov, Alexander Vladimirovich Lentsov, a Red Army soldier who was separated from the large army, met a soldier with the same experience as him, Clement Nikolayevich Savalov, in the birch forest of the Eastern European plains. Together, they walked out of the forest, through the swamps, and went to the flat and vast Ukrainian grasslands to find the Soviet army.
