When Ah Hui was born, war engulfed the land and rival powers vied for supremacy. Her parents were busy conquering the realm and had no time for her.
When she was three, Ah Hui was sent to live with Grandma Su in Biluocun, on Guiyun Mountain. Next door to Grandma Su lived Old Man Song, who depended on his young grandson for company. As far back as Ah Hui could remember, she had followed the Song boy around, begging him for candy.
When Ah Hui was eight, the Song boy went down the mountain to search for his father, a thousand li away. Before he left, he slung a small bundle over his shoulder and told Ah Hui, "Once I've earned honors like my father, I'll buy you the best candy in the world."
Ah Hui tilted her head.
The Song boy was afraid she didn't believe him, so he added, "My father helped our lord conquer the realm. He's a marquis now."
Ah Hui came to her senses and smiled. "My father conquered the realm too. He's the emperor now."
