This novel is adapted from accounts of the life of Yu Xuanji, a historical figure from the late Tang dynasty. It mainly tells of the love and hatred between Yu Xuanji, Wen Tingyun, a poet of the Flower Room School, Li Yi, a top candidate in the late Tang imperial examinations, and the maid Luqiao.
