As a legitimate daughter, Yu Changshu could well be the most miserable one around. Her mother died when she was born, her stepmother is petty, her father doesn't love her, her younger sister is too formidable, and even her fiance has broken off their engagement. If she'd been a little more hot-tempered, there might have been a murder to add to the list. If she'd been more timid, there might have been a corpse, too. But Yu Changshu believes the most important thing in life is to be comfortable with yourself.
If her father doesn't treasure her, she'll treat him like dirt. If her stepmother and half-sister make things difficult for her at every turn, she'll put up with it as long as they don't go too far. They're outsiders who have nothing to do with her, so why should she exhaust herself worrying about them? As for the fiance determined to break off their engagement, well, they've barely met, and she's already forgotten what he looks like.
Yu Changshu thought she might just end up growing old alone, but then an unexpected suitor came along. He said, "You're cursed to be alone, and I'm a troublemaking demon. Your engagement was broken off, and I happen to be without a princess consort. So we're clearly made for each other. Why don't you marry me?"
She thought he was just saying it on a whim, as a joke. She never expected those words to become a vow etched into her heart.
"If you dare marry me, then I dare marry you!"
